Description
This is a classic Nok terracotta head from Nigeria, West Africa.Estimated to be from around 500 BC till about 200 AD. Nok culture, named after the village on the Jos plateu in Nigeria where it was first discovered in 1929, is the earliest known terracotta tradition in sub-Saharan Africa. Characterized by its slanted,heavy lidded drilled eyes under arched eyebrows, a pursed-lipped mouth and diminutive nose , long plaited coiffure, a kind of sideburns. The head is mounted on a custom-made stand.The head measures 6.25 x 3.25 on custom metal and wood base. From a Private Pennsylvania collection.
