North America, US Southwest, Native American, probably Zuni, ca. mid 20th century CE. A bolo tie with a braided leather cord and a rectangular silver ornament studded with inlaid coral, turquoise, jet, and mother-of-pearl. The central motif of the ornament is a thunderbird, with large wings spread open and flared tail feathers. Two dangling silver tips hang from each end of the leather cord. Bolo ties are a symbol of the US Southwest, first created around 1950 by native artists. These pieces are largely unsigned by their artists and serve as a kind of wearable folk art. Size (full bolo tie): 17.75" L (45.1 cm); size of ornament: 1.55" H (3.9 cm).
