Description
Nachum Sokolov, fifth president of the WZO, died suddenly in London on May 17th, 1936. The Annual Levant Fair was taking place exactly then in the Land of Israel. Due to the events of the major Arab revolt which had started about a two weeks before the opening of the fair, the Jaffa port was paralyzed and as a result the Levant Fair was limited in comparison to the previous one. May of the events which had been planned were cancelled, and many visitors cancelled their participation. Following the rumor of Sokolov's untimely passing and due to the meager interest in the exhibition, the organizers of the fair decided to arrange a memorial assembly in the exhibition hall, and it was decided to hold it in the exhibition amphitheater on May 31 (about two weeks after his passing), despite the character of the exhibition not being suited to assemblies for mourning. This is therefore a poster which calls on a "People's Memorial" to commemorate Nachum Sokolov on behalf of the municipality of Tel Aviv, the JNF and the UIA. Speaking at the memorial: Meir Dizengoff, Berl Katzelson and A. Goldstein. Specified in the margins of the photograph: "Entry to the amphitheater is free," and "Entry to the fairgrounds as usual," with the printed stamp of the Levant Fair. Rare.
