Madame Guillotin
Likely the mother of the famous Dr. Joseph-Ignace Guillotin (May 28, 1738 – March 26, 1814), a French physician, politician, freemason and eponym for the guillotine.
A family legend regarding Dr. Guillotin’s mother states, “He was born near a place in Saintes where the executions took place. Hearing the emotional cries of a convict provoked Madame Guillotin into labor and soon after brought him into the world.”
Dr. Guillotin is best known for being the eponymous for the infamous execution device, known as the “guillotine”. On October 10, 1789, he proposed the use of a device to carry out death penalties in France, as a less painful method of execution. Despite both opposing the death penalty as well as not being the actual inventor of the guillotine his name still became an eponym for it.
