Description
Van der Keere, Pieter (1571- c.1646).
Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica Ac Hydrographica Tabula.
Engraved map with original hand color in full.
Amsterdam: Janssonius, 1608 [but circa 1630]
19" x 23" sheet, 29" x 32" framed.
A fine example of this wonderfully decorative world map from the Golden Age of Dutch cartography in original hand-color. Appreciated for its cartes-a-figures design and style, the map is a "skillful copy" (Shirley) of Willem Blaeu's world map of 1606, with little changed save for the addition of several descriptive legends, including Arctic information and a belief that the Straits of Anian and Davis connect to form the potential of a Northwest Passage. This is the fourth state of Keere's engraving, with Jansson's imprint but undated. Shirley 264.
