Title: The Life and Works of Charles Lamb
Author: Charles Lamb - Charles Lamb was an English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his "Essays of Elia" and for the children's book "Tales from Shakespeare," co-authored with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764–1847).

Friends with such literary luminaries as Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and William Hazlitt, Lamb was at the centre of a major literary circle in England. He has been referred to by E. V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as "the most lovable figure in English literature".
Editor: Alfred Ainger - Alfred Ainger was an English biographer and critic. He wrote memoirs of Thomas Hood and George Crabbe, but is best known for his biography of Charles Lamb and his edition of Lamb's works in 6 volumes (1883–88). He was a contributor to the Dictionary of National Biography, writing the entries on Lamb, Alfred Tennyson, Frederick Tennyson, Charles Tennyson Turner and George Louis Palmella Busson Du Maurier, under the initials "A.A."

Book Details: Each volume of this antique seven-volume set appears to have been privately bound with tan cloth-covered boards and green leather raised spines with gilt lettering. Each book is enhanced by tissue-gaurded frontispiece portraits and illustrated plates throughout the text. These volumes are from an out of sequence limited edition set published by The Edinburgh Society between 1883 and 1888.

The books comprise several works by Charles Lamb: "The Last Essays of Elia"; "Mrs. Leicester's School"; "The Essays of Elia"; 2 volumes of Lamb's letters; and 2 volumes of Lamb's plays, poems, and essays. Also included is Alfred Ainger's biography of Charles Lamb which contains other works by Lamb including "The Adventures of Ulysses" and "Guy Faux."
Condition / Notes: These handsomely bound antique volumes show very well, with minimal indications of age and wear. Text and illustrations are clear and crisp through mild uniform age toning.
