Francisco Fernandez Rodriguez
Venezuelan painter, member of the landscape movement known as Caracas School. They were his parents Aureliano Fernández and Martina Rodríguez. In October of 1897 he resided with his family in Caracas. In 1909 he began his artistic studies under the guidance of Professor Eugenio Montaya. In 1911, he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Caracas, where he had Antonio Herrera Toro as his teacher. In 1915 he went to Barcelona (Spain) and entered "La Lonja", later, he traveled to Paris, where he completed his artistic training at the academies Colarossi, Grand Chaumiére, and Julian, having in the latter Lean Laurens as Master of France went to Italy, Israel and Egypt. In parallel to this essentially academic training, Fernandez was nourished by the influence of the plastic production of the Spanish painters Diego Rodríguez de Silva and Velásquez and Joaquín Sorolla.
In 1924 he returned to Venezuela and due to economic reasons, was forced to alternate pictorial activity with work in institutions and official agencies. Between 1947 and 1949 he lived in the United States, then, between 1957 and 1960 he traveled again to Spain and France. At the beginning of 1961 he settled permanently in Caracas, devoting himself completely to pictorial activity. Fernández continued the landscape tradition begun in the 19th century by foreign painters such as Ferdinand Bellermann, Fritz George Melbye, Camille Pizarro and Joseph Thomas, as well as the Venezuelans Ramón Irazábal, Ramón Bolet, Jesús María de las Casas, among others; who captured in their works various aspects of the city's landscape, as well as customs in different regions of the country. His impressionist work also ventures into other themes such as portraiture, nudes, still lifes, still lifes, intimate scenes, etc. His pictorial production has been exhibited in numerous individual and collective exhibitions, including the one organized in 1959 by the Museum of Fine Arts of Caracas. In 1987 the National Art Gallery paid homage to him by exhibiting 60 works in the anthological exhibition entitled Francisco Fernández, for the impressionism.
