Description
Ca. 19th century Burmese pair of Buddha’s chief disciples - Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. Depicted as freestanding sculptures each is sat respectfully with their legs to one side. Shariputra is leaning forward, listening attentively. Maudgalyayana holds his hands together in reverence. Contemporaries of Buddha, they were legendary for their piety and power. Here the sculptor has imparted a touching sense of youthful tenderness.
