New World, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. An oil on canvas painting depicting the Holy Trinity: the Son seated at the left donning a scarlet red robe and holding the Cross with a pair of seraphim above and an angel below him; God the Father as an elderly man, long bearded and patriarchal, dressed in blue royal robes, holding a scepter and globe, with an angel below; finally the Holy Ghost as a dove flying upwards with the golden glow of heavenly light beyond. All members of the Trinity hover above billowing clouds of the celestial realm. The composition is finely delineated in jewel-tone pigments, and the painting is set in a skillfully carved and gilded frame. Size: 21.5" W x 27.25" H (54.6 cm x 69.2 cm); 25.5" W x 31.375" H (64.8 cm x 79.7 cm) framed

The doctrine that God while being of one nature is represented as three - Father, Son, and Holy Ghost - originates in Matthew (28:19) and was told by Augustine of Hippo in the "De Trinitate" (ca. 400 CE).

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private El Paso, Texas collection, purportedly obtained in Mexico in the 1930's
