Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1860 CE. A large mid-nineteenth century oil on canvas depiction of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the Virgin dressed in royal regalia of red and blue robes and a golden crown topped with a cross. She holds the infant Jesus in her left arm, and extends a baton and cross of a rosary in her right hand. The Christ child holds a blue orb signifying the globe, and also wears a golden crown adorned with a golden cross at the top, indicating his role as protector of the earth. The Virgin and Christ Child are housed in a lovely white and gold altar, designed like a classical temple, with a hemispheric dome atop the architectural structure, supported by four lofty Corinthian columns. The painting technique is quite fine. Note how soft and naturalistic the visages of the Holy Mother and Child are depicted, not to mention the meticulous attention to detail evident in the acanthus leaves of the column capitals and the appliques and pearls adorning Mary's robes. Size: 32-3/4" x 21-5/8"

Nuestra Senora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Holy Rosary) is one of numerous titles for the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to religious legend, the Virgin appeared to Saint Dominic, the founder of the Dominican Order, and presented him with a rosary to use for contemplative prayer. In hopes of combatting heresy, the Dominicans instructed followers throughout Europe how to use the rosary. The Virgin, sometimes referred to as Our Lady of Peace, is the patroness of all rosary congregations, and the faithful appeal to her for protection from accidents and danger.
