East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A fierce example of the head of a Zhen Mushou, a tomb guardian, mold-made from terracotta, with traces of black and white pigment on its surface. The Zhen Mushou was a mythical beast, depicted sitting on its haunches, with horses hooves, sometimes wings, and a human face, used to ward off evil in the grave. This example has a scowling face, large lips, and a wide nose, as well as deeply incised hair. Size: 3.9" W x 7" H (9.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
