East Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A nice example of the head of a Zhen Mushou, a tomb guardian, mold-made from terracotta, with traces of red and white pigment on its surface. The Zhen Mushou was a mythical beast, depicted sitting on its haunches, with horses hooves, sometimes wings, and a human face, used to ward off evil in the grave. Size: 2.8" W x 4.2" H (7.1 cm x 10.7 cm)
