Thomas Baxter (English, 1782-1821), entitled "Egyptian Tumbler," ca. 1810 CE. A lively engraving depicting a flexible Egyptian tumbler performing a handstand atop the back of a fierce crocodilean creature. Particularly wonderful is the parallel nature of the gymnast's expression of immense concentration and the crocodile's fierce visage, also displaying great focus with those wide open eyes and toothy jaws. Thomas Baxter, the engraver of this composition (note "T. Baxter del et sculp." printed at lower right), was an English painter who studied at the Royal Academy and created art for such illustrious patrons as Lord Nelson. The son of a china painter, Baxter also created paintings on china that featured imagery inspired by the works of famous British artists including Sir Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West. In addition to establishing an art school in London, Baxter worked for the Cambrian Pottery at Swansea. He later returned to his native Worcester and created works for Royal Porcelain Works and Robert Chamberlain's factory. In the book, "A century of potting in the city of Worcester, being the history of the Royal Porcelain Works, from 1751 to 1851 (B. Quaritch, 1865)" author Richard Binns described Baxter as "the most accomplished artist who painted Worcester porcelain." This engraving has double matts of black and green. Size: sheet measures 12.25" L x 9.125" W (31.1 cm x 23.2 cm); plate measures 10" L x 6.125" W (25.4 cm x 15.6 cm)
