Description
Set of Gothic-period antique engravings. Proof and counterproof (mirrored) engraving impressions on paper. Display the scene titled as "The Madonna and Child with the Abbot Ludwig von Churchwalden". Late Gothic period. Printed by Wolfgang The Goldsmith (Wolfgang Aurifaber) (German, XV/XVI cent.) after Master E. S. (c. 1420 – c. 1468) - the unidentified German Gothic master printmaker. Dated up top - 1477. Watermarked with a Gothic P, small shield and two stars watermark on the main proof, dating this printing to c.1550. Both bear provenance and historical information on back tags. Germany, Late Gothic Period, circa 1477-1550. An impression of this scene is displayed in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. Measurements: Approx. each is 22.25" x 18.25" framed, 12" x 8" the sheets
