Description
Square-form lidded tea caddy container. Glazed faience, intricate red & green over blue and white decorations, all meticulously hand painted - panels alternate between a blooming branch, and a peacock bird perched on such a branch. Peacock motif on the top of the lid as well. Gold trim and accents. Unglazed on the underside, signed in blue by the artist - 759 G RC CLAMECY. Made by prominent French pottery artist Roger Colas, who came to the town of Clamecy, Nièvre, Central France at the age of 15 in 1922. He quickly became self-taught, and worked in the footsteps of his mentor, André Duquenelle, who ran the faiencerie in the town. He gradually took over the business and produced fine and unique art pottery pieces such as this one to until the 1970's - inspired by his predecessors, French traditional, Persian art and Chinese Ming Dynasty earthenware.
