Description
French .950 Japonism silver tea service by Christofle Orfevre, circa 1880. Spot hammered with applied decoration including gilt wisteria and copper bamboo, the covers of the teapot and sugar bowl each with three applied copper butteflies, complete with matching tray. Christofle Orfevres marks to the undersides, french 950 standard hallmarks and Christofle silver maker hallmarks to each piece. This design was likely encouraged by Tiffany's success of their mixed metals at the 1878 Paris Exposition derived from Japanese techniques.
