Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Pachacamac culture, ca. 1000 CE. A lovely textile monstrario, a demonstration piece created by an artist to impress viewers with his/her skills, featuring a checkerboard composition at one end of the sash - each box occupied by a geometric motif - with an attractive border - woven on a back-strap loom. All is comprised of tightly-woven natural camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of scarlet red, golden yellow, and brown against a beige ground - with the wooden weaving instrument still attached. Mounted on chocolate brown fabric backing for presentation. A monstrario was meant to be displayed outside of an artisan's workshop as an example - or "show piece" - of his/her artistic ability in order to attract potential buyers or employers. Size: entire sash would measure ~ 42" L (106.7 cm) if outstretched; fabric backing measures 26.5" L x 17.5" W (67.3 cm x 44.4 cm)

Condition
