Description
Tazza raised compote plate. Thick, finely hand cut crystal top, raised on a baluster form central column and four-footed heavy Sterling Silver base. Central medallion on pedestal (uninscribed). Lion-head feet. Marked "N" on one of the feet. Also marked above the feet with German Hall Marks - POSEN and 800, as well as the unified Crescent & Crown Mark (introduced in 1888) and the city mark. Posen is the name of the manufacturer - Lazarus Posen Witwe (Lazarus Posen’s widow). The firm was started by the wife of the late Lazarus Posen (prominent Polish immigrant silversmith), Mrs. Brendina Wetzlar in 1869 in Frankfurt am Main. In 1880, she was joined by her son, Jacob Posen, and the company gradually became one of the largest manufacturers of Judaica in Germany during the late 1800's/early 1900's. The company was looted and destroyed in the 1938 Night of Broken Glass Nazi pogrom. Frankfurt on Main, Germany, circa 1888-early 1900's. Measurements: Approx. 12.5" high, 12" top diameter. Weighs about 5 lbs or 2.25 kg altogether
