Description
Antique compact or snuff box. Displays a portrait of beautiful young lady in fancy period attire, sitting at a desk. Black lacquered papier-mache, known as Vernis de Martin. Copper-colored linear pattern on back side, identified as one used by the prominent Martin Brothers of Paris. The Martin Brothers of Paris were the first Europeans to fully develop a technique similar to the highest quality lacquerwork from East Asia, which was scarce and highly valued on the European market at the time. The names Vernis Martin and Vernis Paris became widely used for a variety of lacquerware goods and furniture from the period, even if they did not originate from the family's manufacture. France, 18th century, circa 1740-60's. Measurements: Approx. 3.25" diameter, 0.6" thick | See our special $5 starting bid lots at the end of this auction! No Reserve, No Buyer's Premium!
