Description
titled, "Chisholm Trail Cattle Drive". Canvas: 20"H x 48"W; Frame: 28"H x 55.5"W. Signed and dated lower right, "Donna Cook 1984". Donna Cook is a local Texas artist from Saginaw. This painting was commissioned by W. V. "Vic" Young from a historical photograph taken by William H. Jackson, a famous 19th century photographer. The photograph was bestowed to Vic Young by Charles Goodnight, the owner of the cattle. Attached to the photograph was a dated letter written by John Young, Vic Young's father. John Young was the trail driver of this large herd of cattle. The dating of this letter, describing the events recorded in the photograph make it a historical document. The painting created from the photograph, depicts half of the 10,000 cattle in the drive; 5,000 were steer, and these were the first cattle located on the Staked Plains of the Tule Canyon near Tulia in Swisher County. The photograph also shows that this was the largest group of cattle recorded in an area without a fence. Charles Goodnight's cattle were not just longhorns but a mixture of European cattle, having white faces and the hardiness of the longhorn. This painting by Donna Cook has been exhibited at the Cowboy's artists of America museum in Kerrville, and also publicized in Fort Worth newspapers. Provenance: The collection of Derrill Osborn.
