ITALIAN CARVED MARBLE BUST OF REVEREND FRANCIS
BURLANDO (1814-1873), distinguished figure wearing priestly vestments, no signature located, set on a square plinth. Two pieces total. Fourth quarter 19th century. 33" HOA, 23" WOA.
Good overall condition with minor wear, scattered moderate areas of discoloration. Base of figure and plinth with minor chips.
Provenance: Property from the estate of C. L. "Louie" and Betty Van Fossen, Staunton, VA.
Catalogue Note: Born in Genoa, Italy, the Reverend Francis Burlando (1814-1873) traveled to the United States in 1838 as a young priest seeking to evangelize. An important missionary and administrator for the Catholic church, Burlando strengthened existing church organizations and helped establish new ones throughout the American Midwest in the mid 19th century. As national director of the Daughters of Charity during the Civil War, Burlando personally oversaw medical care for the wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg with the assistance of the Sisters under his leadership.
