Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of cast bronze lock sections, each one depicting a horse - one kicking its rear legs and one rearing so as to lift its front legs. The horses are delineated with well-defined manes, ears, eyes, and noses. Horses signified power and military prowess. In addition, they were symbolic of the god Neptune as well as the Roman legions. A wonderful pair of ancient bronze works with rich green and russet patina. Size: horse on left measures 3.625" W x 2.75" H (9.2 cm x 7 cm) - the two horses are of similar size; 3.125" H (7.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
