Description
1860 Life of Stephen Douglas Abe Lincoln Debates Slavery United States Politics
Since the beginning of American politics, few debates have been as famous as the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858. These ‘Great Debates’ between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A Douglas occurred in a series of several small debates. The focus of the debates was slavery, particularly the expansion of slavery to new territories such as Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri. Abe Lincoln has lived on as an American icon and hero, and, unfortunately, Stephen Douglas’s legacy has not prevailed like that of the 16th President.
However, Stephen Douglas’s life should not be overlooked. Henry Flint published a biographical sketch of Douglas prior to the Civil War. This survey covers Douglas’s presidential campaign, which he eventually lost to Lincoln.
