Description
Holocaust Survivors immigration trunk. Stained hardwood with external wooden support bars, metal corner mounts, duel metal drop hasps and side bail handles. 38 3/4" X 24" X 22". Interior inscribed in German; includes family photos, letters, Yiddish dictionary (1898), vintage leather brief case, Displaced Persons police School Stuttgart, Germany certificate dated 1948, Refugee Inoculation certificate, German ID for the physically handicapped dated 1951, photos, etc. This trunk belonged to Mosche Rubin, a Polish Jew who was confined to the Warsaw Ghetto after the Nazi invasion of Poland. He escaped the ghetto and fled to the Soviet Union, where he was forced, along with many other Polish refugees, to work in the coal mines. After the war, he ended up in a displaced persons camp in Munich, where he met his future wife who was working as a nurse in the camp. They waited three and a half years to emigrate to the United States, where they were sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Philadelphia. He was housed by t he famous von Trapp family at their residence in Germantown when he arrived in this country. This trunk is of a standard size and specifications established by the UN's International Refugee Organization and contained all the possessions Mr Rubin was allowed to bring with him to the United States.
Condition
One wood support off (but included in trunk) scratches, abrasions and expansion splits to trunk, tears, foxing and staining to some of the ephemera.
