Description
(Maryland/New York/England, 1820-1879) Important portrait of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Excellently executed example which is signed at the middle left hand side and dated 1868. The piece has been professionally restored and the canvas re-lined professionally. Good overall condition housed in a period appropriate gilt frame. H25 1/4" W21 3/4" Note: The piece is sold from the private collection of a prominent South Carolina family.
Condition
The piece has been professionally restored. There are slight signs of crazing to the surface. The piece has been re-lined. Blacklight shows a repaired tear at the upper right hand corner stretching 8" into the picture not impacting the subject. It is housed in what looks to be the original frame of the period. The stretcher also appears to be original. Sold from the private collection of a prominent South Carolina family. The piece is said to be one of the last portraits painted of Lee. John Edward Robertson worked as a portrait artist in and around Maryland during the time this piece was painted 1868. Little is known however about this painter and research on his life is ongoing.
