Rothschild Conducts Massive Jewelry Sale With Prime Minister Disraeli

Bi-fold autograph receipt signed, 5" x 8", on letterhead of New Court, St. Swithin's Lane, London. Dated "26th March, 1873", and signed by Nathaniel Mayer Rothschild as "Nat Rothschild". Original revenue stamp present. Near fine with strong contrasting ink.

An outstanding piece displaying the connection between the Rothschilds and the British Prime Minister. Signed by Nathaniel Rothschild, also known as "Natty'. Nathaniel was the great grandson of Mayer Amschel Rothschild, founder of the Rothschild dynasty. He writes a receipt as transcribed below:

"Received of Mr. Welbby the sum of Eight thousand four hundred + ten pounds for account of the Right Hon'ble B. Disraeli M.P. for Jewels.

Nat Rothschild

£8410--  "

A fantastic receipt noting the expensive sale of Jewels owned by Benjamin Disraeli.

According to the Office for National Statistics composite price index, prices in 2017 are 10,232.98% higher than prices in 1873. The pound experienced an average inflation rate of 3.27% per year during this period. In other words, £8,410 in 1873 is equivalent in purchasing power to £869,003.68 in 2017, a difference of £860,593.68 over 144 years (over $1,100,000.00.)

This begs the question, was the Prime Minister selling the Queen's Jewels?
