Jerome Kern, Broadway and Hollywood Composer, ALS
1p ALS inscribed overall in green fountain pen and signed by American composer Jerome Kern (1885-1945) as "Jerome B. Kern." at bottom. On watermarked custom stationery with "Jerome Kern." letterhead at top. Written on October 20, 1920. In very good condition. Well-worn paper folds, a few chipped edges, and some closed tears have been professionally repaired. The page measures 8/25" x 10.75."
Jerome Kern wrote this letter of recommendation for two domestic servants named Jack and Jessie Jackson. "It is with genuine regret that Mrs Kern and I see Jack and Jessie Jackson leave our employ. They have been…most polite, extremely willing, competent, spotlessly clean and immaculately honest. We feel that any family will be fortunate that secures their services, and can only add that there is a home awaiting them with us, any time they choose to return."
Jerome Kern was a prolific composer of 700+ songs of popular music over his 40-year-long career. He produced a slew of hits like "Ol' Man River" that appeared in Broadway productions and Hollywood movies of the Golden Age.
In the fall of 1920, the Kern-composed musical comedy The Night Boat, about amorous dalliances on an overnight ferry between New York City and Albany, was wrapping up its last performances in New York. Kern's score for Sally would premier in December 1920. Audiences loved the Cinderella story of a poor city girl becoming a Broadway star; Sally would run for 570 performances.
