Garrett Morphy was Ireland’s leading portrait in the late seventeenth and early
eighteenth century. His portrait of Archbishop Oliver Plunkett (executed at
Tyburn, London, in 1681) was reproduced as a mezzotint. It is believed that he
studied under the Flemish portrait artist Gaspar Smitz (c.1635 – 1688) who was
an active painter of the Irish aristocracy in the 1660s and 1670s
