Henri mile BenoŒt Matisse (French, 1869-1954) in the manner of: ink on paper, signed and dated bottom left 41, stamped verso Le Chat Noir 1881 Montmartre Paris, unframed. Matisse was known for both his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is accepted as one of the most influential modern painters and crowned as the leader of Fauvism, a 20th century movement that favored a painterly style and bold, expressive use of color over the representational or naturalistic values of the Impressionist movement before.
