An extravagant, exotic silver plate metal holder with an EAPG clear glass jar that was used to hold pickles at the dining table.
The heavy silver plated metal frame is adorned with elaborate Eastlake decorations. The arch at the top is adorned with a sumptuous nautilus design. Linear spokes topped with floral finials radiate from the walls of the nautilus. Rich arabesques below each nautilus appear to support and ground them to the frame.; The base of the frame has a repeating repousse design of flowers and arabesques. There is a hook on one side and a prong on the other. These are used for holding a fork and a tong. The tong has chicken feet to hold the pickle. The fork is missing, although it can be replaced with one that coordinates with the frame. The tongs, fork and jar were frequently mix and match – even when new.
The base is supported by sturdy elaborate feet. The circular holder with an opening and flange holds a jar fitted exactly for this holder. There is a matching lid that fits the jar perfectly. The EAPG clear glass jar has a repeating figure-eight pattern.; On the bottom is a stamped mark QUADRUPLE PLATE WILCOX SILVER PLATE Co. with crossed hammers in a circle. “Meriden, Conn.” has been cut off. There is the number 94 stamped near the mark.; MEASUREMENTS
10 7/8” (27.6 cm) tall x 4 ¼” (10.8 cm) diameter. Weighs 1 lb 12.4 oz (800 g); CONDITION
There are no breaks, dents or cracks in the metal and no cracks, chips, or breaks on the glass jar. The lid needs more polishing and has most of its silver. The metal frame could use a re-plating; however there are still silver highlights. There is a tong, but as noted above, the fork is missing. There are wear scratches on the foot ring of the jar. This shows usage and age.; A great design on this silver plate pickle castor. It will make a great addition to your castor collection. It is such an amazing design for the dining table. So much work and design went into this piece. I love the swirling spokes on the arch.
