A RARE SATSUMA ‘MILLEFLEUR’ BOWL BY KOZAN

Satsuma ceramic
Japan, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)


The outside of the bowl decorated with many flowers amongst grasses with gilt details, the gilt rim with a geometrical pattern. The inside is decorated elaborately with the very popular ‘millefleur’ dEcor – meaning ‘thousands of flowers’ – in the form of many petals in red, blue and gold. The underside with the signature in a gold square reserve reading dai Nihon Kozan zo (great Japan made by Kozan) above the Shimazu clan mon.

Dimensions: Height 5.5 cm, Diameter 12.2 cm
Condition: Very good condition, very minor wear to enamels
