Description
Edvard Munch (Norwegian, 1863-1944)Attributed: Study for The Scream, signed and dated '92, ink on paper, unframed for inspection and shipping. Possibly an early unfinished study for "The Scream." The final version, executed in 1893, is one of the world's most famous works of art.
Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and printmaker whose intensely evocative treatment of psychological themes built upon some of the main tenets of late 19th-century Symbolism and greatly influenced German Expressionism in the early 20th century.
Munch created his haunting, symbolic painting after hearing a piercing scream while out walking with some friends. He was compelled to stop and witness the blue-black waters of a fjord overhung with clouds as red as blood – tongues of flame, and listen in anguish to the infinite cry of nature.
The artist also worked in other mediums to create smaller works of his masterpieces, such as lithography (The Scream, 1895-96) and woodcut (The Kiss, 1902).
Conservator's note: Near infra-red spectrography in the Wioodshed Gallery's conservation studio has confirmed that the paper of this piece dates from the 1890's.
Dimensions: 9.25 x 7 inches
Property from a prominent West Coast family collection, the former owner now deceased
