Ivan Aivazovsky (Russian, 1817-1900) Attributed: oil on canvas, signed with monogram lower right and signed in cyrillic with 1895 on verso, framed. Ivan Aivazovsky was a Russian Romantic painter highly regarded for his over 6,000 maritime scenes. The last of the true academic painters and the main painter of the Russian Navy, Aivazovsky was best known for his technical finesse and being the inspiration for the saying, “worthy of Aivazovsky’s brush”, which refers to something of extreme beauty.
