Description
AMERICAN SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF A BOY, watercolor and pencil on paper, bust-length depiction of a dark-haired sitter in profile, wearing blue-striped garment with ruffled collar, no signature located, old inscription verso "Picture of Saml. A. Hayward / about four years of age (1846)". Housed under glass in a 19th-century molded giltwood frame. Circa 1846. 4 3/4" x 3 7/8" sight, 6 3/8" x 5 1/2" OA.
Very good visual condition with minor areas of discoloration. Frame with minor wear. Not examined out of frame.
Provenance: From the Schonberger Collection of Old Lyme, CT.
Catalogue Note: Samuel A. Hayward (1842-1927) was born in Easton, Massachusetts. His father is listed as both a "paternmaker" (sic) and a "carpenter" in census records of the 1850's and 1860's, and a 23-year-old Samuel is listed as a "Mechanic" in the 1865 Massachusetts state census. Married in 1873 to Emma S. Bruce, he is nonetheless recorded as "divorced" by 1900, and, by 1910, Hayward is documented living in Preble Co., Ohio with his second wife, Mary. The present example resembles the work of J. M. Crowley.
