MECKLENBURG, CO., VIRGINIA SCHOOLGIRL ROSE GOLD REWARD OF MERIT, oval form with applied beaded rim, obverse with finely engraved presentation inscription "REWARD OF MERIT / TO Miss Frances A. Lockett / Virginia Female Academy / Boydton, Mecklenburg Co. / Josh. B Warne / Geo. L. Baker / Principals / Novr. 18th 1827", reverse with additional fine engraving "Spelling / Reading, Writing, / Arithmetic, Grammar, / Geography, History, / Chemistry, Botany, / Natural Philosophy, / Belles Lettres, Astronomy, / Use of the Globes, / Music". 1827. 2" H, 1 /2" W.
Excellent overall condition with minor wear and discoloration.
Catalogue Note: Frances A. Lockett married William Albert Jones on May 22, 1833 in Mecklenburg Co., Virginia, and the couple ultimately had 10 children. William Albert Jones, his wife, Frances, and their many children are recorded in the 1850 U. S. Census living on a large farm in Marion, Alabama._x000D_
On September 13, 1825, Joseph Warne and George L. Baker announced in a Petersburg, Virginia newspaper the opening of their new school, the Virginia Female Academy in Boydton, Mecklenburg Co., Virginia, where the proprietors promised "five competent teachers, constantly employed", and described Boydton as "one of the most highly favored spots in the southern part of Virginia".
