Description
1858 Baldwin Dominion Defense of Slavery RACIAL Manifest Destiny Slaves
Samuel Baldwin was a 19th-century Tennessee Methodist cleric known for his summarization of the Manifest Destiny in regards to slavery. He published a book entitled ‘Dominion’ in which he describes the unity of the human race and the political implications. Baldwin even uses scripturally based facts to support the claims of slavery, particularly the Old Testament story of Ham’s race “bearing its part of tribute by tilling the soil and subduing the earth.” (Baldwin, p.119). Colin Kidd even states in his ‘Forging the Races’ that Baldwin’s
“defense of fundamental racial distinctions, that underpinned Southern slavery, declared its intent as a prophetic vindication of the truths of Genesis.”
