Ulrich Frederic Woldemar, Comte de Lowendal (1700-1755), also known as Ulrich-Friedrich Waldemar von Lowendahl or Waldemar de Lowendal; a Danish, German-born French soldier and statesmen. Born in Hamburg, he served in the armies of several countries, but is best known for his service in the French army during the War of the Austrian Succession. In the French campaign in the Austrian Netherlands against the Pragmatic Army he served as a subordinate to Maurice de Saxe. He led French forces that captured Ghent in 1745 and Bergen-op-Zoom in 1747. The King of France, Louis XV, made him Marshal of France for his success in capturing Bergen op Zoom. In 1755 Louis XV gave Lowendal instructions to act as a Plenipotentiary in negotiations with Prussia, designed to prevent the Seven Years War from breaking out. However, Lowendal died before he could carry out his orders and was replaced by Louis Jules Mancini Mazarini, Duc de Nivernais.

Woldemar was the son of the governor of Norway Ulrik Frederik Valdemar Lovendals and Dorothea Margrethe von Brockdorff (1672-1706), and thus the grandson of Ulrik Fredrik Gyldenlove. From 1713 he served Emperor Charles VI where he fought in Poland and in 1714 he was captain. In 1721, he was appointed colonel.

On 17 January 1722, he married Theodora Eugenia, Baroness von Schmitt (1705-1768).

He entered the service of King Augustus II of Poland, where he was promoted to General Field Marshal and Inspector General of the Saxon infantry. In 1733, he was set to organize the defense of Krakow, and in 1734-1735 he commanded the Saxon troops on the Rhine. In 1737 he became Russian Lieutenant General, and in Russia, he married the wife (!!) of Polish Count Joh. Clement Branitzsky, Barbara Magdalene Elisabeth (born Szembeck, 1701-1762).

Lowendahl was presumably been legally divorced from his first wife, but his new wife, however, was never divorced from her husband. However, after some time, she became his legitimate spouse. In Reval, Estonia, she gave birth to his son Francois Xavier Joseph (1742-1808).
In 1740, Lowendahl was appointed governor of Estonia. Quitting the Russian service, he served Louis XV in the Austrian Succession War. In 1743, Lowendahl was promoted to Lieutenant General and simultaneously converted to Catholicism. In 1747, he performed his main achievement, the conquest of Bergen op Zoom, after which he was appointed to the Marshal of France. Lowendahl maintained a close connection to Denmark and worked among others for the restoration of "Royal Great Danes," which was a Danish regiment in the French army. He also applied to be admitted to the Danish state as Count of Danneskjold-Lovendals. He died on 27 May 1755 in Paris.

About the A.L. Collection:

We acquired the "A.L." collection of engravings in London. It contains over one hundred prints created by leading German engravers of the eighteenth century. The anonymous collector "A.L." cut several of these prints to design and paste on a larger laid paper. In 1762, A.L. bound his collection and provided the title in German, "Sammlung von Bildnussen hoher Potentaten vornehmer Herren beruehmter Gelehrten und anderer verdienten Maenner. Gesammelt von A.L., 1762." [Collection of Pictures of High Potentates, Gentlemen, Famous Scholars and Other Distinguished Men, collected by A.L. 1762.]

Without doubts, A.L. can be considered as a German collector. Most of the engravings have a handwritten number at the upper right corner. We provide this number in our item description as the reference number of the A.L. Collection. The fact that this collection was bound in 1762 provides additional warranty that the prints are authentic and created prior to 1762.

Certifications of Authenticity will be included upon buyer's request.

Artwork will be mailed unframed, well packaged.
