Item Details
Description
Mid 19th century, 257 x 146 cm, South West Persia, Fars

A repeat of rounded botehs is arranged in offset rows in the ivory field. Known as "ashkali", the design of the dark blue main border consists of small hooked diamonds lined up on a pole. The rug is an early weaving by the Kashkuli tribe and was probably made in one of their workshops as a commission or in payment of tribute to one of the Khans. The fine weave using silk wefts allowed a high degree of precision in the drawing, which is particularly striking in the delicate border motifs. – Signs of age and wear, several old restored areas and repiled sections; the foundation is somewhat fragile, the ends are slightly damaged.
