Description
James Ingram Merrill (March 3, 1926 - February 6, 1995) American poet.
This is a fine, numbered, limited edition copy of Merrill’s autobiographical poem Santorini: Stopping the Leak. In it he notes that as an artist he has always suffered from "psychic incontinence" - an uncontrollable tendency to imagine the experience of others, to lose himself and get inside them sympathetically and try to give language to their experience. He reflects upon how to survive amidst the "late settings" he was facing as an older artist.
The poem, which first appeared in The New Yorker, was expanded for this version. This is number 29 of the limited 300 numbered copy (plus twenty six lettered copies, A to Z), Metacom Press (Worcester) 1982 printing, of James Merrill’s "Santorini: Stopping the Leak".
This slim (19 numbered pages) first edition is in near fine condition, the only extraneous element being the nameplate of a previous owner attached to the front end page. There are no other stamps or attachments.
The only writing is the poet’s signature and copy number.
The pages are clean throughout the book, with no stains or scuffs, no tears or creases. The string binding is in fine condition, with no looseness to any pages.
The accompanying photos are accurate reflections on this copies conditions.
