Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $50**

West Africa, Central Ghana, Ashanti culture, ca. 19th century CE. A petite brass weight, produced via the lost wax process, shaped in a characteristic rectangular form with an abstract linear motif which could be representative of textile patterning. Weights have been used to measure gold dust since the Pre-European 1400s. According to the African Art Museum "The Ashanti are credited, however, with introducing representational art to this genre -- so anything depicting a person or animal, post-1700, can rightly be called an Ashanti gold weight." Size: 0.625" W x 1.05" H (1.6 cm x 2.7 cm).

Provenance: private Allen Davis collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
