West Africa, Central Ghana, Ashanti (Asante) culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine set of four cast-brass figures used as weights when weighing quantities of gold dust. The smallest shows a standing figure blowing into the end of a lengthy flute or wind instrument. The second figure holds a cane in one hand and a supports a barrel atop his head. The third figure also holds a barrel atop the head but is shown smoking a small pipe. The largest figure depicts an older person mourning the death of the figure shown at their feet. Size of largest (mourning figure): 3.375" L x 2.125" H (8.6 cm x 5.4 cm).
