Description
A rare example of Zand Dynasty work, the translucent horn grips with rolled pommel and steel bosses, the tangband with gold inscriptions, the broad crossguard wrought of finely patterned wootz with pierced and expanded terminals. The massive blade of exceptional width and length, of moderate curvature, of fine and unusual wootz, highly contrasted, and wrought with a superb broad fuller in the form of an undulating serpent on each side. Signed at the right forte in gold,
with the name and titles of Shah Abbas I, ABBAS SHAH BANDE-YE VILAYET (r. 1588-1629) above the well-known maker’s name, ASSAD ALLAH. In its velvet-covered wooden scabbard with steel mounts, the suspension bands of wootz, the chape terminating in a monster’s head. Latter 18th century. Minor loss to quillon terminal and suspension band. Overall length 104cm.
