Pablita Velarde (1918 - 2006), 20th century, natural pigment painting on board, titled, 'Mountain Sheep (Big Horn) Dancer' depicting the image of a Native American dancer, signed by the artist on the face of the board and also titled by the artist on the back of the original painted wood frame.

Dimensions are: panel - “11 3/4 tall X 10“ wide, frame - 18 1/2“ tall X 16 1/2“ wide. All measurements are approximate. This lot also includes a group of four hand-signed Christmas cards from Velarde's 1960 commission for New Mexico Magazine’s Christmas issue illustrating the Nativity. Artist Biography: Artist Biography: Pablita Velarde (given name Tse Tsan (Golden Dawn)) (Pueblo of Santa Clara, New Mexico, 1918 - 2006). Velarde graduated from Santa Fe Indian School where she was under the direction of instructor Dorothy Dunn and influenced by the first well known Indian painter, Tonita Pena. One her first commissions was received in 1934 to paint murals for the World’s Fair. In 1938 she set up her studio and between 1939 and 1941 Velarde was employed by the US Government to paint murals for the Museum at Bandelier Monument in New
