Description
Momaday, Alfred (Haun Toa) (American/Kiowa Indian, 1913-1981), Three Dancers, 1947, tempera and ink on heavy cream colored paper, signed, dated and annotated N. Mex. on the feather in the lower right corner, image size 11.25 x 21.5 inches, full sheet 17.75 x 26.25 inches, matted and framed 24 x 32 inches. A very early work. Momaday lived in New Mexico from 1947, where he was the principal and art teacher at the Jemez Pueblo Day School, of the Bureau of Indian Affairs of the Department of Interior. His son, N. Scott Momaday, was the first Native American to win a Pulitzer Prize for literature.
Condition
Light spotting visible in the skin of the rightmost dancer, otherwise In good condition, sheet with mat burn to the margin; evidence of previous hinging along the edges of the verso.
