Description
An Egyptian faience combination amulet of Pataikos, Late Period, c. 664 – 30 BC, an interesting protective amulet combining the powers of gods. On one side the dwarf god Pataikos is depicted bald with a scarab atop his head, standing on a pair of crocodiles, a leonine bust between his legs and brandishing a pair of knives with holding a serpent clenched within his teeth. One the opposite side the dwarf god is shown with the head of Horus-the-Savior, wearing a tripartite headdress, hands to either side of his protruding belly, his genitalia exposed. On the base around a central opening, are figures of quadrupeds alternating with standing human figures. A most interesting piece and an amulet form of the protective cippus which is scene depicting a similar combination of attributes around the god Pataikos who in this fashion is perhaps a form of the god Ptah the craftsman. H: 2 ¾ in (7 cm). Light mineral deposits over deep blue-green glaze. Ex New Jersey estate.
