Description
East Asia, China, Neolithic Period, ca. 3000 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built ceramic jar decorated with a complex black- and red-pigmented geometric pattern of broad circles with cross-hatched patterns within, hash marks within the rim, leafy motifs around the rim exterior, and an undecorated base. The vessel is defined by a flat base, a rotund body with a sloping shoulder, a squat neck with a flared rim, and a pair of applied strap handles boasting segmented patterns. This piece is from the very early pottery tradition found at various archaeological sites along the Yellow River Basin spanning from modern day Gansu Province in northwest China to Henan Province in central China. Size: 6.25" W x 4.75" H (15.9 cm x 12.1 cm).

Condition
Small loss to rim, minor nicks to base, body, handles, and rim, and light fading to some areas of pigmentation. Nice earthen deposits and light root marks throughout.
