Description
Pre-Columbian Sinu culture jet, jasper, and clay beads used to make a contemporary split strand necklace with nine strands of beads. There are three dark strands of jet, three red toned strands of jasper, three brown or tan strands of clay. The beads range from 2 mm to 5 mm. The Quimbaya tumbaga measures approximately 2.5 inches in diameter. The necklace is strung on a cord with a wax knot and hook and eye closure. The necklace measures 26 inches long, not including the pendant. Originally purchased by the consignor from Peruvian artisan Gerardo Roca who was living in Colombia in the last quarter of the 20th century. As in many other cultures as well, the Pre Columbian people used to bury their loved ones with items of necessity etc. for them to use and/or enjoy in their afterlife.
Condition
There is tarnish around the top of the pendant that has spread to the beads around the pendant. One of the strings seems to be missing some beads. Good to very good condition overall.
