Item Details
Description
Very Rare Shenandoah Valley Multi-Glazed Redware Pitcher and Dishless Washbowl Set, attributed to J. Eberly & Co., Strasburg, VA, circa 1890, wheel-thrown pitcher with footed base, upswept spout, and ribbed strap handle with applied thumbrest and spurs, the surface dipped in cream-colored slip, decorated with splashes of copper and manganese, and covered in a clear lead glaze. Wheel-thrown bowl with applied strap handles embellished with faux screwhead terminals and applied balls of clay, the rear of the bowl surmounted by "fiddlehead" scrollwork flanked by balls of clay. Surface of bowl dipped in cream-colored slip, decorated with heavy streaks of copper and manganese, and covered in a clear lead glaze. The bowl in this set without its usual soapdish. While the interior of bowl is glazed over, some smearing to the underlying slip suggests the bowl was originally made with one, but the potter removed it. This set is the first that we have offered featuring a bowl with dishless form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in New York State collection. Pitcher with reglued section to right side of spout, with professional coloring along the crack. Pitcher in otherwise excellent condition with minor surface lines to base, not visible on interior. Bowl with three restored rim chips on front, a 4 3/4" restored crack descending from a restored chip on right side of bowl, and a minor restored flake to end of one handle. Additionally, a restored chip to top edge of central scroll on reverse, a small restored chip to scroll to right of center, base chips (two of which are restored), and some typical kiln scars to bottom of foot. H (of pitcher) 12 3/4" ; Dimensions (of bowl): H 6 7/8" x W 12 7/8".
