Description
Slip-Decorated Redware Canning Jar with Lid, Galena, IL origin, second half 19th century, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and flared rim, the top portion of the jar with dipped slip decoration, the entire surface covered in a clear lead glaze. What appears in the photo to be large, reddish flakes around the bottom half of the jar are actually natural variations in the glazed surface. Includes glazed Galena, IL redware lid. Provenance: From a long-term private collection of Galena, IL redware consigned to this auction. A reglued 1 1/4" x 1" wedge to rim. Two rim chips and some additional light wear to rim. A few small glaze flakes to surface, one of which occurred in the firing. A 1" in-the-firing contact mark to side of jar. Heavy chipping t lid. H (excluding lid) 8 3/8".
