Very Japanese antique look but made in Europe during the Victorian Aesthetic Movement.
Circular wooden container covered in a simulated black lacquer and decorated with a gold paint to simulate gold lacquer. The design is of Japanese people in various poses with artifacts and gardens. The lightweight piece has a hole in the top to be used for dropping in pins. The base shows rings showing through the base paint. The wood was probably turned on a lathe.
There are two words scratched on the base. It looks like a name.
MEASUREMENTS
2 ¾” (7.0 cm) diameter x 2 ¼” (5.7 cm) Weighs 2 oz (60 g)
CONDITION
There is black lacquer loss on the edge of the base foot ring. The head of one of the figures is worn off.
A European mimic of a Japanese piece of lacquer. It still has the feel of Japan.
